At Counter, we flip the script on traditional consulting and that doesn’t stop when it comes to our Consultants. Counter Consultants aren’t just allocated to clients – they choose to work with them. That choice fosters commitment, alignment, and a real sense of ownership from day one. In this blog series, we’re shining a light on the talented individuals behind our counter-consultancy model – the people bringing energy, curiosity, and a problem-solving mindset to every engagement.
Today, we’re interviewing Yana, part of the Counter Team within Manchester Airports Group (MAG): a developer whose journey from design to tech is driven by creativity, grit, and a genuine desire to make an impact.
1. What’s the main reason you chose to work in tech?
I chose tech because it fits my skills and personality. I’ve always loved problem-solving and logic – maths was my favourite subject at school. Coming from a graphic design background, I think the transition into tech was a natural extension of it and it allowed me to combine my interests in art and problem-solving, offering endless opportunities to learn and grow.
2. What’s one challenge you’ve tackled at MAG that made you feel proud?
Joining MAG for such a big project so soon after my bootcamp was a huge achievement. One of my first tasks was creating an accordion with animation using just a Figma design – something I’d never done before. I carefully recreated it, even recording a video to study it in slow motion. When our designer said it was pixel perfect, it felt amazing. Of course, I could do it much faster and easier now, but that first little accomplishment will always stand out.
3. What do you enjoy the most about working as part of the Counter team?
Working within the Northcoders graduate community makes it feel less daunting, as I’m collaborating with peers who have gone through the same learning experience. Having the support of my Tech Lead, Rich, is another big plus, as I receive guidance, regular feedback, and mentorship to help me succeed in this role. Before starting, we were fully equipped and supported, and I got to meet many lovely and encouraging people. I feel that Counter is genuinely invested in helping me secure this role permanently, which keeps me motivated to succeed.
4. How do you ensure your work aligns with MAG’s culture and goals?
I make sure my work fits with MAG’s goals by focusing on quality, learning every day, and working well with my team. I always try to create reliable solutions and take feedback to improve. Teamwork is really important to me, and I enjoy collaborating to get the best results. I also admire MAG’s focus on sustainability and want my work to support their efforts to make a positive impact.
5. What motivates you to go above and beyond for clients like MAG?
Knowing my work directly impacts such a large and influential company motivates me. It’s exciting to contribute to a project that affects so many people while learning and growing as a developer. The opportunity to develop my skills and potentially secure a permanent role drives me to give my best. I treat this placement as a valuable learning experience, focusing on adaptability and growth. Regardless of the outcome, I’ll leave with improved skills, meaningful relationships, and real-world experience that will benefit me in the future.
